A CAT & A BOY {a love story of sorts}

These two have managed two years together, and although I wouldn't say they were best friends, they certainly hang out a lot together. Stanley definitely feels the love more for Betty than the other way round, but recently I think Betty is warming to him and realising he isn't so bad really. I always had pets growing up, we had a black and white cat my parents got when my Mum was pregnant with me, and she was called Kitty (original I know...) and outlived 5 others cats, 2 rabbits, 3 hamsters, goodness knows how many fish, and died at the grand old age of 21. I was so upset when she died, but I do think it taught me a lesson on death and being caring for something else other than a human being. For most children it can be their first experience of death, and although this is not nice, it is a good way of learning about the bigger issues out there that they will one day have to face. I really feel that having a cat around the place makes our home feel complete. I know some people can't stand cats, they find them 'offish'! And I realise they can be funny old creatures, but I have always preferred them to dogs. I like their independence and they way they look at you, they have some very cutting looks. We have only had a few incidents with Betty lashing out at Stanley, and mainly because he probably pushed his luck. I know he still adores her though and always thinks he can command her about and get her to play with him, which of course never works!

Do any of you have pets with your children, and do you think it is an essential part of growing up?

  1. oh, that's such a sweet post and the photos are adorable! i wish i could keep a cat or a dog, but i have to look after my man and a kiddy instead :( (my man remembers from childhood that they could never leave the house and go on holidays for longer than 2 days, unless camping, but again not everywhere)

    1. With the cat we can leave her, she's pretty independent and the neighbours are happy to pop in and give her a cuddle and put down food if we go away. Harder with a dog though, they take more looking after than even a kid i bet!!

  3. This is so cute. We have Monty, a white bichon frise, and Lilian is so in love with him. At first they didn't like each other but now Lil simply cannot be without him, he isn't too bothered by her but at times he likes the attention. Every evening he comes in to the lounge when Tim puts the music on and they dance together, it's quite sweet! We'd really like to get a kitten too, Lil loves cats but The Grinch (Tim) says no. It's so lovely seeing your child grow up with a pet, really special.

    1. HAHA to the Grinch name! I wish I could get our cat to dance, but she'd just give me a filthy look if I asked her...

  4. Theo and alma still don't get along really, she teases and winds him up, then he chases and tries to pull her tail! Both as bad as each other! But I do think its important to have animals around, it's been great to try and teach theo to be calm and gentle, and to know that when he does grab her that it makes her sad and run away, so hopefully eventually they'll figure it out and get along!

Love these photos, especially the ones by the window! X

    1. I think the whole calm thing is good. And then when we go round other peoples houses with animals he's pretty respectful to them, whereas some of his play friends that come over chase our cat round and round like a game because they are so excited to see one!

  5. We have a little dog, Beasley and a 8 month old boy, Emmett - they really love eachother. Beasley is really protective of Emmett and has definitely got more terrorial since he was born. Emmett can be a little grabby, but has learned to be gentle very quickly. I'm really looking forward to watching them grow up together. Also, apparently babies with pets are meant to be healthier :-)

    1. I'm pleased about the healthier thing, I didn't know that. I was hoping he wouldn't get cat allergy from having grown up with one...
Your two sound very sweet together, it'll be fun when your boy is old enough to start throwing balls for Beasley, what fun they'll have.

PS Emmett is SUCH a sweet name!! x

  7. Your morbid thoughts on teaching then about death made me giggle because that's exactly how I feel! Tried to explain it to a friend last week who looked worried and said, "so you've bought a cat so Johnny can watch it die?"
    Noooooo!

    1. Bahahahaha I never quite though of it like that, but now you mention it it does sound a little like I got the cat so Stan can watch it die. Honestly that wasn't my thought process at all!

  8. We have a couple of friends staying/living with us at the moment and they have come with their two cats. Henry cannot get enough of Wilma and although the feeling is not entirely mutual I think she is getting very used to having him around and they do play games together of sorts (she is a very usually sociable cat). Delilah on the other hand avoids Henry like the plague. I would be VERY tempted to get a cat once they leave - the problem is that the poor cat will have a hard act to follow.

  9. Oooh what a lovely space your blog is to visit - I am so pleased I just chanced upon it!

These pictures of your TWO little ones are too cute :-)

I have a 16 month old little boy Luca and a 3 year old Chinese Crested dog called Alfie. A little like you Luca loves Alfie quite considerably more than the other way around. I am hoping this improves as time goes on and I do think it is a lovely thing for little one's to learn about being kind to animals from as young an age as possible.

    Kitty x
